Dr. Sudheer Joseph currently leads a team of scientists as Group Director (Ac) of the OMARS Group, which oversees applied research, modeling, and operational activities at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, Hyderabad. He earned his doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and subsequently worked for approximately two years as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa. He joined INCOIS in 2001 as a founding member.
Dr. Joseph played a pivotal role in implementing the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) at INCOIS and in integrating data assimilation into the system. He was instrumental in establishing an eddy-resolving Indian Ocean forecasting system, unique to this basin and among the highest-resolution operational systems for the Indian Ocean. This system supports a wide range of socially relevant applications, including oil spill trajectory prediction and search-and-rescue operations.
Dr. Joseph has authored and co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. He received the Certificate of Merit (2021) from the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, for outstanding contributions. He is a member of the Expert Team on Operational Ocean Forecast Systems (ETOOFS) and serves as Chair for the Indian Seas under the Ocean Prediction Decade Coordination Committee (DCC) of UNESCO.
