Activities
The Belize High Seas Fisheries Unit (BHSFU) is the government authority responsible for the regulation, monitoring, and management of Belize-flagged vessels operating on the high seas. The Unit ensures compliance with national legislation and international obligations under Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs) such as ICCAT, IATTC, and SPRFMO.
BHSFU oversees vessel licensing, catch and effort reporting, observer programs, electronic monitoring, and enforcement measures aimed at preventing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. It supports sustainable fisheries through science-based decision-making, data collection and analysis, and the implementation of conservation and management measures.
