The Undersecretariat for the Environment (SMA) is responsible for coordinating, planning and executing the State Environmental Policy (Law 9,509/97), working on the following topics: territorial environmental planning, with the objective of making economic development compatible with social with the preservation of the quality of the environment and the ecological balance; support for the protection of State Conservation Units; preservation of wild flora and fauna; promotion of ecological restoration; definition of priority areas for government action regarding the quality and ecological balance of the State of São Paulo; in the establishment of criteria and standards of environmental quality and norms related to the use and management of environmental resources; environmental monitoring and inspection, including wildlife; support for the control and inspection of the quality of water, air and soil;between others. The Undersecretariat for the Environment (SMA) also acts in the articulation and standardization of environmental licensing and inspection activities, in addition to monitoring sectorial public policies that may impact the environment. The Undersecretariat is responsible for managing state urban parks and for planning and monitoring the management of conservation units. The SMA is also responsible for coordinating studies and planning activities for mitigation and adaptation to climate change, with a view to fostering and promoting the State Policy on Climate Change (Law No. 13,798/2009).
