Durrell is implementing a new project which is “Improving livelihoods through community-based marine management in Baly Bay, Madagascar”. The objective is to facilitate community-based management of Baly Bay fisheries through laying the groundwork for the establishment of Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs). These will preserve Baly Bay’s habitats and biodiversity, whilst improving the financial security and nutrition of coastal communities. This project will follow the LMMA model to assert communities' right of access to resources and empower local people to follow best practice to sustainably manage resources, with a participatory and inclusive governance system. It will also build capacity of the local community-based organization (VOI Lovasoa) to support the management transfer process
Skills
The LMMA Project Officer will ensure the general coordination, implementation, and follow-up of the project activities with regards to the LMMA objectives, the sustainable fishery management and the management of mangrove and seagrass habitats around Baly Bay.
The LMMA project officer will particularly be in charge of ensuring the following objectives:
* Participatory mapping conducted in four communities, representing 15 fishers’ associations, to inform marine management.
* Increased capacity of VOI Lovasoa to support processes towards a formal management transfer.
* At least one community is equipped to formally manage an LMMA, with appropriate structures in place.
