Activities
The Underwater Acoustics Group (UAG) at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UNEW) is part of the Digital Signal Processing and Communications Research Group within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and currently includes three permanent members of academic staff, and six full-time research associates. UAG has been actively involved in sub-sea signal processing research for 10 years, including work on acoustic communication systems, sonar systems (particularly synthetic aperture sidescan sonar), channel modelling, suspended particle backscatter, and direction finding algorithms. This work has been funded extensively from the UK research council, the EC, and a consortium of UK based companies, and has been published extensively in international journals and conference proceedings.
