1.      Have served as PS, RA, SRF and JRF at the Department of Marine Science since 2012-2024 along with completion of PhD in 2015.

2.      Served as RA in CSIR extramural project entitled “Time series observation on phytoplankton dynamics in the coastal waters of   Indian Sundarban mangrove forest, NE coast of Bay of Bengal” with sanction no. 24(0330)/14/CSIR/EMR-II dated 23.04.2014, effectively terminated on 30.09.2017.

3.      Possess considerable experience in classroom lectures and convening practical classes during that period [First: Letter Ref. GF (154)/17PAH dated 15.12.2014 and Latest: Letter Ref. GF (664)/17PAH dated 13.12.2017] by the order of the Secretary (UCSTA), University of Calcutta.

4.      Was awarded the inaugural prestigious DST-PURSE Senior Research Fellowship against a proposed project entitled “Establishment Of Potential Diatom Bioindicator In The Well Mixed Estuarine Waters Of North Eastern Bay Of Bengal Through Comparative Studies On Laboratory Culture In Artificial Media And Direct Field Observation”(Sanction No. 130 dated 21.011.2014) in University of Calcutta for a period of 01.02.2014 to 31.01.2015.

5.    On and from February of 2012 to December of 2014, I had worked as project fellow of a major research project funded by U.G.C entitled “Blooming of Phytoplankton, Biological indicators, Biological pump in Hooghly estuary” dated 12.01.11 with sanction no. 39-567/2010 (SR), terminated effectively on 31.01.2014.

6.      Have secured 1st Class 2nd rank in both my B.Sc. (H) and M.Sc. Examinations of the University of Calcutta.

7.      Was awarded the one time honorary fellowship – Dr. P. Chatterjee memorial fellowship for securing 1st Class 2nd in B.Sc Botany Hons. Exam (2007) of University of Calcutta.

 1.      I have acquired more than 15 years (since 2009 - present) of active research experience, beginning with my post graduate dissertation studies.

2.      Have taken part in 85 field studies till date performed on the West Bengal associated coastal Bay of Bengal waters and mangrove forests of Sundarban as well as inland waterways (with on board sampling distance ranging from 1 to 30 nautical miles from coastline).

3.      Commenced my journey as a researcher with dissertation works on salt excretory capacities of mangroves plants of Sundarban.

4.      Have checked the variations in salt ion concentrations among selected plant species, stations and seasons and also have recorded the relationship in between the accumulation rate of organic carbon and the rate of excretion of salt in those plant species.

5.      Continuing till date since 2010 (Commenced with Ph.D. study on the bioindicator potentials of diatoms species of Hooghly estuary) with the research on population dynamics of phytoplanktons at study sites in and around the Indian Sundarban, at the Northern coastal Bay of Bengal.

6.      Possess an impressive knowledge on phytoplankton and zooplankton taxa encountered around the study area and equally experienced in analyzing physico-chemical/biological parameters (Wind Speed, Precipitation, Temperature, Salinity, Eh, pH, D.O., BOD, NO2-N, NO3-N, TN, PO4-P, TP, SiO4-Si, SO4-S, H2S, TA, Chl a, Relative Abundance, Primary Productivity and Respiration, Ecological Indices etc.) for any environmental assessment studies.

7.      Studied interactions between dominant diatom taxa and possess a very precise knowledge on the population dynamics of estuarine phytoplanktons.

8.      Have monitored the effects of salinity on centric diatoms species recorded from the waters of the study sites on the Hooghly estuary.

9.      During the tenure of my research I have recorded over 140 phytoplankton species and studied the changes in community composition and changes in biovolume and biomass of over 90 species of phytoplanktons in the waters of Hooghly estuary during the post cyclonic storm ‘Aila’ period.

10.  Have been working with artificial culture media (modified Provasoli Media and self improvised and formulated ones) for culture of diatoms primarily, and am more than efficient in maintaining viable cultures.

11.  Performed the first ever studies on the effects of salinity changes on auxospore inductions in centric diatoms of Hooghly estuary, both in nature and in laboratory conditions.

12.  Checked the Influence of unidirectional circulation of nutrient - enriched water on chain length of selected diatom species in estuarine environment

13.  Have observed in detail the changes in biovolume and biomass of phytoplankton species in the Hooghly estuarine waters, both in response to seasonality and also to natural calamities.

14.  I harbor broadened knowledgebase from research experiences on bioindicator phytoplankton species and have performed various experiments on establishing many diatom species as bioindicators of the well mixed estuarine environments of Hooghly estuary and surrounding mangrove associated aquatic ecosystems.

15.  I have strived to establish the best possible biomonitors among the pennate and centric diatoms through observations and experiments in natural and artificially simulated conditions.

16.  In continuation with the previous point, I have also checked the effect of tropical cyclones on the pennate and centric diatoms and susceptible they are to such events.

17.  Have monitored the interrelationship between Planktonic diatoms and some preselected physicochemical variables in the Hooghly Estuary, Bay of Bengal.

18.  In a preliminary study I have recorded the possible existence of co-dominance among the relatively dominant diatoms found in the study area.

19.  Possess a detailed knowledge of the Sundarban mangrove and mangrove associated taxa [floral (priority) and faunal].

20.  Also performed some works on the abundance and phosphatase activities of phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) of Sundarban mangrove sediments.

21.  Worked on depth integrated changes in the mangrove soil microflora and physico-chemical properties.

22.  Investigated the influence of microbial composition on carbon storage capacity of the mangrove soil at the land-ocean boundary in the Sundarban mangrove ecosystem.

23.  Performed investigations upon the effect of varying degree of salinity-sodicity stress on phytoplankton and cultivable microbes in the estuarine water of the Sundarban Mangrove Forest, India.

24.  Have also studied, as part of team, the depth wise diversity of free living n2 fixing and nitrifying bacteria and its seasonal variation with nitrogen containing nutrients in the mangrove sediments of Sundarban, India.

25.  Along with the above task, also worked on the depth profile exploration of enzyme activity and culturable microbial community from the oxygen-starved soil of Sundarban mangrove forest of India (mainly the Dehydrogenase and β-D-Glucosidase activities).

26.  As part of a team I have studied the soil urease activity of the Sundarban mangrove ecoregion at Lothian Is.

27.  Have worked on variations in the concentrations of inorganic nitrogen species (DIN) in beach environments of Bakkhali and Frasergunj.

28.  Worked to understand the feeding strategy of some selected estuarine copepods in response to mixed phytoplankton diet.

29.  Experimented on Salinity tolerance of selected estuarine copepod species to understand the effect of dilution and their response to changing environment.

30.  First person to work on the nutritional value of stingray species viz. Telatrygon zugei, Gymnura poecilura and Himantura uarnacoides from the eastern coast of India (in terms of moistures, total protein, total lipid and total carbohydrate contents).

31.  Have studied the effects of the antimicrobial properties of the mangrove plant species of Sundarban. I am the first researcher to have established antimicrobial activities of the mangrove leaf extracts against the milk spoilage microflora.

32.  I have also worked on developing alternate means to study ANAMMOX in various natural aquatic ecosystems, primarily in vitro along with various enzyme assays such as nitrogenase, urease, phosphatase etc. Have cultured total coliforms, sulfate reducing bacteria, methanotrophic bacteria, methanogenic bacteria, nitrogen fixing bacteria, phosphate solubilizing bacteria, blue green algae, diatoms with success by using a myriad of culture media and specifications.

33.  I have studied the methane flux dynamics in Sundarban mangrove sediments by observing the activities of methanotrophs and methanogens.

34.  Have studied the influence of bioturbation on methane and nitrogen fixation dynamics at the Bakkhali and Frasergunj beaches as well.

35.  Have undertaken extensive field trips as part of a collaborative AVIRIS project with ISRO on the Hooghly River during 2017-19.

36.  I have checked the effect of copper on Macrobrachium scabriculum, the chameleon shrimp of West Bengal. This was the first of its kind on the species involved.

37.  Discovered for the first time the presence of Acartiella faoensis in waters of West Bengal, possibly Eastern India, or the country as a whole in 2018.

38.  Possess hands on knowledge on plant chromosome preparation techniques and biometry and plant tissue (Callus) culture techniques.

39.  Experienced in plant grafting techniques, bonsai preparation and cultivation of edible mushrooms.

INSTRUMENT OPERATIONAL EXPERIENCE

1.      Very efficient in working with light compound, brightfield compound, phase contrast and inverted microscopes.

2.      Possess extensive working experience with Gas Chromatography (GC) for determination of rate of nitrogen fixation diazotrophic microalgae and bacteria by using acetylene reduction technique.

3.      Received basic operational training in handling Transmission Electron Microscopes from Electron Microscope Society of India.

4.      Have worked with pH meter, turbidometer, autoclave, BOD incubators, algal biomass culture chamber, high energy particulate air flow machine, high pressure (performance) liquid chromatographs (HPLC), coulometer, TOC analyzers as well.

5.      Can perform frequently used and relevant statistical calculations using MINITAB, EXCELSTAT SPSS software.

6.      Dexterous in working on/with Computer and related Web based tasks.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

As a serious aquaculturist and fish keeping enthusiast,  I possess considerable experience [1993 onwards] in successfully keeping, breeding and maintaining a myriad of freshwater tropical fish (South and Central American, African Cichlids, Characins; African and Asian catfishes belonging to Loricariidae, Pimelolidae, Bagridae, Heteropneustidae, Clariidae; Asian anabantids, major and minor carps of Cyprinidae etc.) species and aquatic plants (Anubias, Aponogeton, Bacopa, Egeria, Cryptocoryne, Echinodorus, Sagittaria, Cabomba, Hydrilla, Hygrophila, Myriophyllum, Microsorum, Bolbitis, Ludwigia, Vallisneria, Nymphoidea, Nymphaea etc).
