Alfred Hanson's research interests in chemical/biological oceanography are the distribution, speciation and biogeochemical cycling of trace elements, the marine photochemistry of trace metals and organic substances, factors controlling the bioavailability and toxicity of trace metals, the photobiological and photochemical effects of UV radiation in marine waters, biogeochemical processes associated with suboxic coastal waters, influence of small-scale and episodic processes on biogeochemical dynamics, and the development of submersible chemical oceanographic instrumentation.
