• My research is interdisciplinary and spans processes such as coastal upwelling, open-ocean mixing and circulation, and the interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere, in order to understand biodiversity, the temporal and spatial distribution of organisms, and of primary and secondary productivity. I have worked on fisheries problems, but more generally I seek to understand how marine organisms are affected by natural environmental variability and human activity.
• I use any possible research tool I can to understand these connections. I make extensive use of remote sensing and field observations, and where possible, I use time series statistical analyses.
• My present research focus in three interesting themes: a) studying the resilience of the Mangrove Coast at two National Estuarine Research Reserve at Jobos Bay (Puerto Rico) and Rookery Bay (Florida), looking at changes of the mangrove coverage using high resolution WorldView satellite imagery; b) looking at satellite atmospheric aerosols to track African Dust for the project Early Warning of Synoptic Air Quality Events to Improve Health and Well Being in the Greater Caribbean Region; c) studying the seasonal changes of the newly established Sargassum population on the Tropical Atlantic Ocean, and of the mechanisms suspected to be related to the aggregation of Sargassum along the Tropical Atlantic.
