Innate immune responses in invertebrate species. Physiological and molecular studies of molecules involved in extracellular and intracellular signaling pathways. Molecules involved in immune recognition. Immune genes expression studies and their regulation (transcription-regulation). Mechanisms of pattern recognition, non-self recognition and host-defense reactions to microorganisms. Effect of environmental factors on gene expression and genotoxicity. Transcriptomic (mRNA expression) and proteomic (expression of proteins) responses to experimental challenges and/or in natural habitats.

Marine Biotechnology: looking for new marine derived compounds of bacterial origin with potential biotechnological use. Biomaterials of marine origin and their application in tissue regeneration and biological glues

Solid background and full comprehension of molecular biology methods and their application in experimental research: DNA and RNA analyses, PCR-based methods including reverse-Transcriptase-PCR, use of RNA/DNA modifying enzymes for downstream applications: cloning and sequencing and expression of proteins or peptides. cDNA library construction and screening methods using colony–hybridization or Northern blot techniques, use of Real-Time PCR methodologies for gene expression and quantification of mRNA. Use of fluorescence microscopy, including FISH methodologies for the detection mRNA (genes) in tissue sections. Marine microbiology handling techniques: isolation, culture maintenance and 16S characterization. Bioinformatics knowledge; RNAsequencing; next generation sequencing, analyses of metagenomes.
