My research interests are in (1) trade in threatened marine species (2) use of marine resources for non-food purposes (e.g. medicines, aquarium display, and curios), (3) marine protected areas and zoning, (4) community-based coastal resource management, particularly in Southeast Asia, (5) subsistence fisheries management, (6) seahorses, pipefishes, pegasid fishes, (7) reproductive ecology of fishes and other marine organisms, and its evolution, and (8) by-catch reduction. I direct PROJECT SEAHORSE, an interdisciplinary and international organisation committed to conservation and sustainable use of the world?s coastal marine ecosystems. We engage in connected research and management at scales ranging from community initiatives to international accords. Collaborating with stakeholders and partners, we use seahorses to focus our efforts in finding marine conservation solutions.
