Commemoration of the African Day of Seas and Ocean
Theme: Sustainable Futures: Preserving African Seas and Oceans
Protecting the ocean is everyone's business – and so the responsibility of every African. The AU at its 22nd summit in January 2014, set a period from 2015 - 2025 as the 'Decade of African Seas and Oceans' and the date 25 July as the "African Day of Seas and Oceans". In this regard, the IOC’s Sub Commission for Africa & the Adjacent Island States (IOCAFRICA) of UNESCO, the Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP) Africa node and the Africa Union Commission are holding a virtual event in commemoration for the day.
