The Report of their meeting, budget and workplan was submitted to the IODE XX meeting Beijing, China , May 4-8, 2009. The next scheduled meeting of GEMIM(XI) will be May 25-28, 2010 in Oostende, Belgium. A short report on interim activities of GEMIM follows with attached updated Budget and Workplan timeline and dates: Communications Communications within IODE MIM Communications Strategy A MIM Communications strategy is in the final stages of revision. This strategy is the result of a survey taken amongst relevant stakeholders in the wider library and information science community, as well as an IODE Review indicating the perception of a lack of understanding of MIM by the wider IODE Data Management community. Although the final MIM Communications Strategy has not been published, steps have been taken to communicate more effectively. GEMIM currently receives notification of the activities in other IODE programs and is taking part in some appropriate projects, such as IODE Data Portal, OceanAtlas projects, ODIN portal projects, SCOR linking data to publications. The GEMIM Chair is on the planning committee for the next IODE Assembly and several projects for MIM members have been mentioned in regards to this- *GEMIM action item for discussion May meeting. Review of Membership in GEMIM It was noted that GEMIM has lost several long-term members due to retirement or relocation. An examination of current membership and needs was undertaken with the IODE Secretariat to identify needs. New short-term GEMIM members will take part in the May GEMIM XI meeting. GEMIM Chair delivered listing of large scale MIM issues to Secretariat towards recruiting new Long-term GEMIM members. Continue to build Communications with Marine Information National Coordinators through use of email communications set up by IODE Secretariat. Building Cooperation with other Marine Information Management Programs. As stated in our Communications Strategy Goals: Improved synergies with external stakeholders and other agencies involved in the development of marine information management GEMIM has been working toward improving collaboration with other similar marine information groups and projects. In September 09 OceanTeacher MIM offered a workshop entitled Digital Asset Management as a Post IAMSLIC Conference Workshop. An E-Books workshop was offered as an IAMSLIC/OT pre-conference workshop, but was cancelled. A OceanTeacher MIM pre IAMSLIC conference October 14-2010 on Grantswriting for MIM projects has been accepted. Other instances of collaboration include GEMIM members representation on IAMSLIC (International Association of Marine and Aquatic Sciences Libraries and Information Centers) Repository Committee, members of University Marine Science Libraries and ASFA serving as Guest Instructors to OceanTeacher Workshops, liason with Scientific publishers through ASFA regarding standardization of thesauri, metadata and data discovery and GEMIM participation in SCOR project linking data citations to publications. An MOU was signed by IAMSLIC September 2009 and is currently under review by IOC. *As noted in the attached workplan and budget a request is made to support GEMIM Chair travel to ASFA Board Meeting in July, 2010. Discussion to include collaborative outreach, e-publication and training with participating members. GEMIM topic -Collaboration with other International Repository projects: OceanDocs member attended November, 2009 D4Science Meeting at FAO, Rome. D4Science is a project developed under the FP7 program of the European Commission. Its main goals are to develop an environment where it will become possible to share e-infrastructure and data for research. There are partners involved in the field of fisheries (FAO-ASFA), earth sciences (GENESIS-DR) and also ESA, DRIVER (repository consortium). The project will create HYPERLINK "http://d4science.eu/vre" Virtual Research Environments offering significantly enhanced services to scientist without incurring high development and maintenance costs. Actions for GE-MIM at May 2010 meeting: Recommend IODE work towards a partnership agreement with D4Science. The partners already have 3 'ocean/aquatic' members. Joining would start to build an 'ocean/marine/aquatic' core subgroup. Opportunity for data and information within IODE to work on a joint project Opportunity for GE-MIM to influence information management decisions GE-MIM can advise on metadata GE-MIM can advise on ontologies, thesaurus GE-MIM may provide assistance in data input and quality control MIM Community can provide dissemination *Budget request for $1500 for attendance at D4Science meeting Fall 2010. IODE Marine Information Management Products: OceanTeacher Academy The objective of the OceanTeacher Academy (OTA) is to offer a teaching programme of courses related to oceanographic data and information management and the development of related products and services. The OceanTeacher Training Academy underpins all Ocean Data and Information Networks supported by IOC/IODE. A planning Session was held January 2010 to develop a new OceanTeacher Academy Prospectus . URL for prospectus: HYPERLINK "http://www.oceanteacher.org/Documents/OTA%20COVER%20A4.pdf" http://www.oceanteacher.org/Documents/OTA%20COVER%20A4.pdf New marketing target lists to inform interested groups and students were developed and used to announce this prospectus. OT Workshops held in 2009: Developing Institutional Websites, Digital Asset Management (IOC Course with IAMSLIC/Euraslic post conference) E-Books Pre Conference course cancelled) 2010: Preservation and Archiving of Digital Assets, Literature and Databases of the Marine Sciences-rescheduled for April date 2010, Disaster Planning and Recovery, Grantwriting for Marine Information Managers, Writing for Professional Publications International participants from Indonesia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America. Special workshop with partners: IAMSLIC, ASFA are planned. New Instructors for Information Management were recruited from the University of Miami, IAMSLIC, University of IOWA and the American Library Association. OceanDocs- The OceanDocs Steering group is developing a Policies Statement with strategic objectives: The OceanDocs Network has been created to provide a distributed network of OceanDocs Central and institutional, regional and national repositories whose records will be harvested by Avano to provide a unique access point to the publications Development of OceanDocs Central, hosted by IOC/IODE Project Office, to provide a repository for any ODIN or ocean institute within IOC Member States, that does not have the capacity to set up their own repository. Development and support of an OceanDocs Network of OAI-compliant repositories (Institutional, national and regional) hosted by ODINs or individual institutes within ODINs. These provide access to full-text publications created by scientists affiliated to oceanographic and marine institutes and managed by their libraries and information centres. Integration of document records into AVANO, HYPERLINK "http://www.ifremer.fr/avano/" http://www.ifremer.fr/avano/ Build an IOC/IODE harvester. Working to create a filter through Avano to provide one retrieval point to the records within all ODIN repositories Integration of Repositories into ODIN Information Portals, Digital marine atlases and Databases: ASFA , OceanExpert and Datasets linking *As noted in the attached workplan and budget a request is made to support a meeting of the OceanDocs Steering Committee and National Coordinators of OceanDocs meeting Fall or Winter 2010. Accomplishments recently include: Version 1.52 software upgrade, enhancement includes the integration of the AGRIS AP extension, installation at IODE, Oostende. Future enhancements to include comparative ranking amongst other repositories, development of easy to install OceanDocs version. Previous enhancement includes the Open Journals. Usage statistics for this resource have increased steadily since inception in 2008. Total usage to date 593,000 downloads. OpenScience Directory- UHasselt and IODE- continues to be a much used resource by ODIN MIM This resource provides free Online full text journal access to developing countries. Access to even more journals is planned for the future.
