It is currently managed by three GE-BICH members: Gwen Moncoiff, Hernan Garcia and Mary Kennedy. There are currently 44 registered collaborators (i.e. with edit permission). The wiki was made public view in January 2010. GE-BICH membership Two short-term members have officially joined GE-BICH since GE-BICH IV: Dr Hernan Garcia from the US-NODC and Dr Toru Suzuki from the Marine Information Research Center. Both Dr Garcia and Dr Suzuki are members of PICES TCODE group (Technical Committee on Data Exchange) and will bring additional expertise in water chemistry and a link with the Pacific area. A contact with GOOS (IODE Secretariat, GE-BICH chair) has not been officially identified but it is envisaged that Dr Bill Burnett (NOAA National Data Buoy Center) will be invited to attend GE-BICH V. Current group membership is 4 long-term members (3 of which will need to be replaced in 2011) and 3 short-term members. Controlled vocabularies submitted to SeaVox This activity has been slow to start and, although the wiki is now set up to host contributions, further reminder will need to be sent to self-appointed leaders. The vocabulary list for plankton net gears and water samplers have been started and are likely to be the first ones completed in time for submission to ODS before GE-BICH V. We will be pushing for the other list to be started asap. QA/QC of biological and chemical data Preparations for the QA/QC workshop recommended by GE-BICH IV started in February 2009 with the search for a venue. A special session within or closely associated with IMDIS was considered and contact with the organizers made however it soon became obvious that there was already too many activities planned around IMDIS; adding another meeting would have been counter-productive. As a result, decision was made to hold the meeting at the IODE Project Office, on 8-11 February 2010. It was agreed that the main objective of the workshop was to evaluate existing procedures and define a minimum set of QC tests and criteria focusing on dissolved inorganic nutrients (phosphate, silicate, nitrate+nitrite, nitrate, nitrite and later ammonium) and dissolved oxygen in seawater. A short document describing the background, purpose and specific objectives of the workshop was written by H. Garcia and G. Moncoiff, and distributed to GE-BICH members for comments. Invitations to attend the workshop were then sent to targeted individuals in July 2009. Invitations to nominate experts were also sent to co-ordinators of organizations or programs such as SeaDataNet, ICES/PICES working groups and IODE. We received 37 positive responses for a maximum workshop capacity of 20. Selection was based on the relevance of peoples expertise in relation to the workshops objectives and also on geographic distribution, as we attempted to have a good balance of participants from northern and southern hemisphere regions and also from as many oceanic and marginal seas regions as possible. At the end, 19 experts participated to the three and a half day workshop. There were experts in chemical data management as well as data producers and data usage from 13 countries (Argentina, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Iran, Japan, Russian Federation, Sweden, South Africa, Ukraine, UK, USA) and one international organization (ICES). A number of protocol documents and comments had already been exchanged via the wiki and this enabled us to focus the workshop on four key issues: 1) Quality control checks and procedures; 2) QC flags schemes; 3) Strategy for handling common QC issues, and 4) Units and minimum metadata requirement for data reporting and exchange for the targeted variables. The meeting produced several outcomes. First, the meeting agreed to submit two proposals to the IODE/JCOMM Ocean Data Standards process describing: (1) a QC quality flag scheme based on quantifiable and subjective tests and (2) a schema for five data processing levels to provide a framework for data management. The meeting agreed also to recommend (1) metadata terminology for reporting measured variables and their units of measure as well as (2) a work plan to recommend a minimum set of numerically defined QC tests that could be adjusted to reflect broad regional to basin scales conditions. These outcomes along with material compiled on the GE-BICH wiki should provide the basis for a technical white paper on the QA/QC of chemical data in oceanographic databases, as planned during GE-BICH IV. The report from the workshop will be published in March 2010.
