It also aims to stimulate discussion in regions, as well as in global scale, on major issues in Ocean Observation and Research. The GSSC-X will be hosted by the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI), Republic of Korea. Workshop will be held at the Seoul Olympic Parktel (88 Bangi-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea) beginning at 1100 LST, Tuesday 13 March 2007, and end at 1800 LST of the same day. Full details regarding arrangements for GSSC-X and workshop are available on HYPERLINK "http://www.ioc-goos.org/gssc10" http://www.ioc-goos.org/gssc10. WORKSHOP THEME: REVIEW OF GLOBAL AND REGIONAL ISSUES IN APPLICATION OF THE OPEN OCEAN AND COASTAL OBSERVATIONS 1. PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP 1.1 It is continuously increasing the need for embedding the interest and participation of oceanographic experts of relevant scientific programmes/projects in the activities of the GSSC. The GSSC Scientific Workshop is planned during the 10th meeting, in this context. It presents a good opportunity for scientists to relate their scientific/technical achievement, to exchange knowledge, and to build on or learn from the innovations, developments and good practices of their peers. 1.2 It also provides an opportunity for focused discussion on regional issues of interest, in recognition of the GSSC session venue, that presentations on the regional issues in Asia and Pacific area are particularly encouraged. 2. WORKSHOP THEMES AND FORMAT 2.1 The Workshop will be organized in sessions that address the following themes: Coastal Observations new or improved technology in support of coastal observing systems; integration of techniques and platforms; boundary current observations; interfacing coastal and deep-ocean/global observations; application and practice in regions. Regional Marine Environment and Ecosystem Modelling Application of observational data for research and for environmental/ecosystem modelling; model development, regional application with a particular focus on the Asia/Pacific region, and capacity building. Data Management and Assimilation evaluation/analysis of observational data; data communications and data assimilation; performance and efficiency benchmarking; new systems and practices; application and practice in regions. 2.2 The Workshop will begin following the official opening of GSSC-X at approximately 1100 hours on 13 March 2007, and will continue until approximately 1800 hours on the same day. Each presentation will be allocated twenty minutes, which includes five minutes for questions and discussion. Any presenter requesting any change to this format should do so at the time of submitting the paper abstract. 2.3 A PC with projector will be provided. Special audio-visual requirements should be communicated to the Workshop Coordinator (Dr. Dong-Young Lee, HYPERLINK "mailto:dylee@kordi.re.kr" dylee@kordi.re.kr) and the Secretariat (Ms Boram Lee, HYPERLINK "mailto:b.lee@unesco.org" b.lee@unesco.org) when the abstract is submitted. 3. SUBMISISION OF ABSTRACTS AND PAPERS AND PRESENTATION MATERIALS 3.1 Those who are invited to give a lecture or who wish to present a paper at the workshop are encouraged to submit an abstract to the Workshop Coordinator (copy to the Secretariat) at the earliest opportunity, but no later than 16 February 2007. As a guide, abstracts should be of no more than 200 words, indicating the nature of the presentation or paper, and its key findings or significance. An abstract of all presentations is required for inclusion in the programme. 3.2 The contact details for the Workshop Coordinators are: Dr. Dong-Young Lee (Workshop Coordinator) Vice Chair, GOOS Scientific Steering Committee Coastal Engineering Research Division Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute (KORDI) Ansan, P.O.Box 29 425-600 Republic of Korea E-mail: HYPERLINK "mailto:dylee@kordi.re.kr" dylee@kordi.re.kr Ms Boram Lee (Secretariat, GOOS Project Office) Ocean Observations and Services, Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), UNESCO 1, rue Miollis 750732 Paris CEDEX 15 France E-mail: HYPERLINK "mailto:b.lee@unesco.org" b.lee@unesco.org 3.3 After consolidating the abstracts and workshop programme, the Workshop Coordinator will invite the submission of full papers and/or presentations in PowerPoint format. These will be required by 9 March 2007. All presentations will be published online through the GOOS web site ( HYPERLINK "http://www.ioc-goos.org" http://www.ioc-goos.org). 3.4 The Workshop Coordinator and the Secretariat will notify presenters in advance of the meeting of any variations to the presenter schedule or time allocation. 4.
