Collect sea surface salinity data and sea surface temperature acquired by vessels when they are underway ? The data concerned have been acquired mainly by thermosalinographs (TSGs) and in some cases by FerryBox systems or equivalent Data are centralized at the GDAC (Coriolis) level Data are distributed through a web site and ftp sites (both delayed mode data and A back up facility is provided by US-NODC Gosud formats have been developed (V1, V2, V3). Gosud V3 format can hold both near real time data, delayed mode data and water samples data that have been used for processing the delayed mode data A method and a tool (QC tools) has been developed to process data in delayed mode (IRD) Data originators Contributions from Research vessels (NOAA, Coriolis Ifremer, Shom, INSU-,CSIRO,)with a global and consistent approach Contribution from research vessels with an individual approach (Spain, Belgium, ) Contributions from Ship of Opportunity with a consistent approach and relying on a scientific advisory group (IRD) Contributions from Ship of Opportunity with a consistent approach (VOS Nippon) Data that circulate in other projects (MyOcean at European level) Other pinpoint contributions Data that circulate through the GTS Data quality The final quality of the data varies depending of the data originators The more close the relation between data originators and a scientific advisory group is, the better is the quality of the data Strength and weaknesses Strength Many sources of data have been identified (more than 120 vessels) The dataset is quite consequent Some data are of high level of quality (scientific processing) The data distribution is quite robust and in an unique format Weaknesses The project is seen as data management project There is no strong well identified scientific advisory group The project is not very well known and in consequence the data gathered are not very used. The Project is not linked to other global observations projects Meta-data are of very different level. From nothing to Future of GOSUD Governance Identify a Steering Group What kind data ? Only T & S data or other parameters ? Near real time data or delayed mode data or both NRT and delayed mode ? Quality of the data Any contribution is accepted or only well identified and organized in networks contributions ? All data or only data that have passed through a process of elaborating a high quality dataset ? Data from GTS: must be included or not ? How to clearly identify the difference of quality of the different data sets when distributing them ? Quality of the meta-data What is the minimum set of meta-data required ? Do we accept the data without the minimum of metadata required? Resolution What is the resolution required ? Do we accept the data with lower resolution? Organisation Central repository or distributed system ?
