Background The International Tsunameter Partnership (ITP) was established under the auspices of the IOC International Cooperation Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IGC/IOTWS). Its purpose is to support the establishment, effectiveness and on-going viability and enhancement of tsunami detection and warning systems using deep ocean monitoring stations (tsunameters). The ITP has since become an Action Group of the Data Buoy Cooperation Panel (DBCP), which is a subsidiary body of the Joint WMO-IOC Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM). The 6th meeting of the ITP will be held in Oban in conjunction with the 26th meeting of the DBCP and of some of its associated Action Groups. The DBCP meeting on 27 -30 Sep will be preceded by the meeting of the International Moored Buoy Implementation Panel on the weekend of 25-26 Sep, and will be followed by the ITP meeting on the 1-2 Oct. ITP meeting participants are invited to participate in the DBCP meeting, including the DBCP Scientific and Technical Workshop. Please refer to HYPERLINK "http://www.jcomm.info/DBCP26" http://www.jcomm.info/DBCP26 for further details. Objectives of ITP Meeting To review observed equipment performance for all tsunameter types to share lessons learned, to identify and promulgate best practice and to identify and promote desirable product innovations. To exchange information on new technologies and products and platform applications, including cabled tsunameter systems, and multi-role tsunameter platforms. To share experience and build a record of operational best practices for tsunameter systems qualification, deployment, maintenance and operational monitoring. To accelerate progress on real-time data exchange from all buoy types across all networks, and extend that focus to platform metadata collection and exchange. To progress current ITP actions with respect to vandalism and sustainability challenges. To discuss the near-field tsunami warning problem, and the implications for monitoring technologies and for downstream warning centre operations a special workshop topic subject to the availability of key theme leaders. To provide input on the processing and visualisation of tsunameter data to the global working groups for tsunami warning centres and to the IOC-established global task team on sea level monitoring for tsunamis (scheduled to meet in late Nov 2010). To review the ITP structure, leadership positions and relationships with the DBCP and global and regional tsunami warning groups. To develop a work plan for the next year. Logistics The meeting venue and travel and accommodation arrangements are similar to those of the DBCP meeting, and helpful information can be found via links from the DBCP meeting web page: HYPERLINK "http://www.jcomm.info/dbcp26" http://www.jcomm.info/dbcp26. Participants will be responsible for making their own arrangements for travel and accommodation. Details regarding the venue, hotels, transportation, etc., will be sent to all nominated participants well in advance of the ITP meeting, but will match those established for the DBCP meeting, which are available on the JCOMM web site at http://www.jcomm.info/dbcp26. Contact and Registration Participants are required to advise their intention to attend the ITP meeting directly to the ITP Chair, by e-mail to: HYPERLINK "mailto:k.jarrott@bom.gov.au" k.jarrott@bom.gov.au. (Tel: +61 3 9669 4163), by no later than 7 September. Ken Jarrott Chair International Tsunameter Partnership Vice Chair Southern Hemisphere, Data Buoy Cooperation Panel Preliminary Agenda International Tsunameter Partnership Meeting, ITP- 6 1-2 October, 2010 Scottish Marine Research Institute, Oban, Scotland, UK (Note: The meeting agenda topics and time allocations will be reviewed and promulgated at least two weeks prior to the meeting. The final agenda will be reconfigured in accord with the quality of materials circulated prior to the meeting, the availability of key participants or discussion leaders, and the most effective use of meeting time. Some topics will require contributors to prepare and circulate material prior to the meeting, so that material can be consolidated for discussion.) Friday 1 Oct 0900hrs 1700 hrs 0900: Registration 09:30: Meeting Start AGENDA ITEMS Introduction and Review of Agenda Review of Actions from Prior Meetings Status of National and Regional Networks Aggregation of nationally-prepared network status reports for the Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Caribbean and North Atlantic regions, with discussion.
